Removing the I From I-Pad

The easiest solution most people think of is to go somewhere without wifi, where the phones, games and social media won’t work. However, this is merely pressing a pause button, for the pull back to the phone and screen will be just as strong when you get home.

A better option would be to find something they are more passionate about, such as martial arts, dance, swimming, sport, playing an instrument, drama, art or yoga. Children and teens who are committed to playing in a team, enjoy a practice or have a particular discipline, will always make that a priority.

If you don’t know where to start, then try yoga. Yoga offers a way of not only connecting with others, but also themselves on a level that no other activity can. If taught by a well-trained teacher, kids yoga and teen yoga will develop mental strength, physical health and emotional well-being in an age appropriate way that can have a lasting impact. Most children’s yoga classes have a social element where children feel they belong, have fun and experience real connection. All teen yoga classes have moments of quiet, reflection where teens can experience stillness and peace, often for the first time.

A rule I have in teen classes is to leave their phones at the door, because the communication and connection they are about to experience is beyond anything their phone could provide. The highlight of any yoga class is the moment, I look around and see all the worry, tension and stress draining away from faces in the room and the faces that sit up at the end of relaxation, look me in the eye with genuine gratitude say, “Thank you.”
